Three cheers for ACS Ipoh! Once again, for the third time now, ACS achieved a Malaysian record. This time we worked with nature and produced a record-breaking formation with 31000 plants, from four different species. The formation, which consisted of a huge hibiscus, the letters ‘ACS Ipoh’ and the theme ‘Let’s Green The Earth’, was declared the largest plant formation in Malaysia’s history by Dato’ Dr. R. Subramaniam a/l Rama Naidu, the representative of Malaysia Book of Records on the 29th August 2013 during an official recognition ceremony. We ACSians were proud to have Ipoh Mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim to officiate the ceremony. Besides the Mayor, all teachers and students were also elated to welcome Tuan Haji Muhamat Roli Bin Haji Hassan, the Director of the Perak State Education Department, Tuan Haji Marazlen @ Mar Azlan Bin Amran, the Kinta Utara District Education Officer, Mr Sri a/l Sankaran, an officer from the Kinta & Kampar Agricultural Department, principals and other guests of honour from the Board of Governors, the ACS Alumni and PTA as well as parents. After the last pot was placed in the formation by the Mayor, all waited with eagerness for the result of the 10-month school project. Just at the moment Dato’ Dr. R. Subramaniam made the announcement that ACS achieved a record,  defeaning cheer rose from the crowd on the field. A formation of airplanes which was preparing for the National Day celebration passed by just at that moment as if to celebrate together with all present. It was truly an appropriate ending for that day. To make the day even better, Mr. Rodney Lee from Sunrise Palace Sdn. Bhd. presented a mock cheque of RM12000 for the plants in the formation. He also made the Mayor very happy when he promised to send 5000 plants to the Ipoh Railway Station. At last, Florathon 2013 had ended, but the valuable experience would be cherished in the heart of each and every ACSian throughout time.

The 58th Swimming Gala was held on the 22nd and 23rd August 2013. The first day, which started at 2.30 pm was packed with both boys’ and girls’ events, ranging from 100m freestyle to 25m butterfly style. On the second day, the Guest of Honour, Dr. Lai Thian Seong who is the Chairman of the Board of Governors, and other special guests made this annual school event a memorable one. After an inspiring speech from Dr. Lai and a splendid drum performance from the Wushu Club, the swimming events commenced. The first one was 50m breaststroke event in which the swimmers tried to outdo each other. Other events were as exciting as the first. The competition ended with the team events. Oldham once again controlled the swimming pool by emerging as the Champion. However, that was not the most exciting moment. The day ended with a spectacular fireworks display which was the first to see for an ACS Swimming Gala.

It was indeed a great morning on the 24th June 2013 when a group of ‘Old Boys’ from the ‘Class of 1979’ paid a visit to their beloved school, SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh. For Mr. KT Pillai, Mr. Moses Ooi, Mr. Jason Wong, Mr. Ronnie Tan, Mr. Sie Weng Tseng and Mr. Thong Chee Keong, the old buildings of ACS, the classrooms, the library, the swimming pool and even the corridors, which year after year have been the pathways for the ACS students, are special places which remind them of their younger days. To make sure that ACS remains a place which nurtures young men into strong, dynamic and successful men, Mr Ronnie Tan presented a cheque of RM10,000 to the principal, Pn. Soot Mooy Ching. The money was raised during a reunion dinner among the school’s former students held in Kuala Lumpur. Their purpose was to give something back to the school. Now it is up to Pn. Soot to decide on how to use it. Many thanks to the ‘Old Salts’ who still remember their Alma Mater.
